To kill or inhibit the growth of cancer cells without causing excessive damage to normal cells.

Chemotherapy can suppress bone marrow function, leading to reduced levels of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, putting the patient at risk for infections, anemia, and bleeding.

Mucositis.

Use a central line or a large, stable peripheral vein, and frequently assess the IV site during infusion.

Drink plenty of fluids to flush the medication from the bladder and avoid late-night doses to prevent overnight bladder retention.

Congestive heart failure.

Many chemotherapeutic agents are teratogenic and can harm the fetus if the patient becomes pregnant.

Bodily fluids, including urine, feces, and vomit, can contain the chemotherapy drug or its metabolites for up to 48 hours after administration. Use a toilet rather than a urinal and flush twice. Wear gloves if cleaning up any bodily fluids.

Stop the infusion immediately, assess the IV site, and notify the healthcare provider.

Methotrexate inhibits folic acid synthesis. Leucovorin is a form of folic acid given to rescue healthy cells from the toxic effects of methotrexate, preventing or mitigating side effects like mucositis and bone marrow suppression.
