Testosterone replacement therapy is indicated for men with low testosterone levels due to disorders of the testicles, pituitary gland, or hypothalamus, a condition termed hypogonadism.

Common side effects include acne, oily skin, increased body or facial hair, mood swings, testicular atrophy, and increased LDL cholesterol levels.

Androgens can stimulate the growth of prostate tissue and may exacerbate or activate an underlying prostate condition.

The patient should take the missed dose as soon as remembered but skip it if it's almost time for the next dose. They should not double the next dose.

Regularly monitor the patient's hematocrit and hemoglobin levels, as androgens can stimulate erythropoiesis and lead to polycythemia.

Androgens and anabolic steroids can potentially cause liver toxicity, including cholestatic jaundice, hepatocellular adenomas, and peliosis hepatis. Regular liver function tests can detect these adverse effects early.

Monitor blood pressure regularly and watch for signs of fluid retention, as these drugs can lead to hypertension. Additionally, lipid profiles should be assessed, as these medications can alter cholesterol levels.

Patients should be educated about the potential for dependence and withdrawal symptoms. They should be advised not to discontinue the medication abruptly and to discuss any changes in dose with their healthcare provider.
